New Girl [6 seasons, ~22 episodes each]
New Girl (along with Modern Family and Schitt’s Creek) is one of my favorite sitcoms of all time. And also in my top 3 shows of all time. The two things that make or break a sit-com are characters and episode plots. New Girl excels in both of these—each of the five main characters has their own personality and never feels two-dimensional, and most episodes don’t feel like fillers. Each episode is filled with subplots on friendship, love, and career. And it’s really, really funny.
favorite episodes: Pilot (1x01), Thanksgiving (1x06), Jess & Julia (1x11), The Landlord (1x12), Injured (1x15), Cooler (2x15), Quickly Hardening Caulk (2x19), Julie Berkman’s Older Sister (4x03), Background Check (4x06), Goldmine (4x07), Spider Hunt (4x17), Clean Break (4x22)
Schitt’s Creek [6 seasons, ~13 episodes each]
Schitt’s Creek feels like a show that shouldn’t have worked, but it did. The story unfolds as a rich family gets their assets confiscated by the FBI and is sent to Schitt’s Creek, a very small and isolated town that they bought as a joke years ago. I laughed every single episode, and cried in a few. The humor is so fresh and so funny. All of the characters could have been caricatures due to their very strong personalities, but the brilliant actors manage to make them feel very very human.
favorite episodes: The Drip (1x02), Wine and Roses (1x06), Finding David (2x01), Milk Money (2x08), Pregnancy Test (4x02), Open Mic (4x06), Merry Christmas Johnny Rose (4x13), Housewarming (5x05), Life Is a Cabaret (5x14)
